Madam – Ann Marie Hourihane (Opinion, December 13th), has shrewdly identified the need for Presbyterian prudence in the Republic.

Hugh Miller set the standard for a bank manager in 1854: “Ingenuties, plausibilities, special pleadings, all that make the stump-orator great, must be brushed aside by the banker. The question with him comes always to a sternly naked one: is, or is not, this person to be trusted with the bank’s money?” However you can keep the Eurovision Song Contest – it’s much too expensive to stage.
