Preparing for the general election

Madam, – Now that Micheál Martin has been elected to the Fianna Fáil leadership, perhaps he will now feel secure enough about his future to resign from his teaching post and allow some part-time teacher to get a permanent post.

If he fails to do so then we can only conclude that  he is determined to add a teacher’s pension to the two hefty pensions he will eventually collect as a retiring government minister and TD? If Mr Martin fails to give up the teaching post before the general election then I suggest that the voters in Cork South Central send him back to his teaching post on a permanent basis and not allow themselves to become all glossy-eyed at the prospect of another “real taoiseach”.

It must be remembered that Micheál Martin was a senior Cabinet minister during the reign of the worst government in the history of the State and that, apart from the smoking ban,  his ministerial career to date has produced nothing of note. It should also be remembered that the last “real taoiseach” was forced to resign in 1979 after losing two Cork byelections, which calls to mind the old saying “there’s nobody better than your own to tell you what you are”. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Well done to Daniel Philbin Bowman and his band of volunteers for providing voters with a practical instrument for assessing candidates’ fitness for the job of representing us in Dáil Éireann through their telluswhy website (Opinion, January 31st). As the employers of all our public representatives, given that we pay the salaries and expenses from the public purse, we have a duty to carry out a thorough vetting of candidates’ background and experience prior to installing them in the positions being applied for.

I look forward to reviewing the CVs on the new website and conducting the subsequent job interviews on my doorstep in the Limerick constituency. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – May I ask all households in Ireland to put a sign on their letter box saying: “No election leaflets, please”. This is not to say you do not wish to talk to politicians, just that you do not want money wasted on election leaflets that will inevitably end up as rubbish. – Yours, etc,
