Sir, - I am delighted to learn that the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is shocked by the alleged £8.5 million paid to his old mentor and friend, Charlie Haughey. May I congratulate him on his superb use of language in Poland? It is great to see that his command of English is so good.
My problem with his comment is this: was he not shocked when it was admitted that Mr Haughey got £1 million way back in the McCracken Tribunal? Is he shocked only by the scale of payments and not the fact that there were payments? Is he, in the words of George Bernard Shaw, haggling only over the price? Or maybe he was misquoted, like so many others times in the past. Could someone ask him? - Yours, etc.,
