Madam, - As a frequent user of dual-carriageways and motorways in the Republic and Northern Ireland, I am constantly amazed at the poor behaviour of drivers south of the Border. Many people drive constantly in the "fast" lane and there are frequent instances of "under-taking".

Now that the M50 has in part become a three- to four-lane highway, matters have deteriorated even more, with cars floating across all four lanes.

Could the Road Safety Authority not run a TV campaign teaching the rules of driving? We used to have ads reminding drivers that overtaking on the left was illegal (except when the car in front is indicating to turn right), and that you should overtake in the "fast" lane, and immediately return to the middle or left lane.

Drivers in Northern Ireland seem to have no problem doing this, so it must just be the lack of enforcement and education in the Republic that causes this dangerous behaviour.
