Sir, May I extend hearty congratulations to Patricia Wall for her brilliant letter headed Roll Over Beethoven. Ms. Wall has expressed my sentiments, and indeed those of my peers, in a splendid, speculative letter. (I believe I wrote in similar vein some years ago.)
As she says: "We only hear classical music in the ad-breaks". Hopefully, the Hong Kong experience will impinge on the producers of RTE programmes.
I listen to several interesting "chat programmes" on radio.
The incidental "music" is invariably rock, which is my bete noire. Now I accept that some like this, but surely, as the Hong Kong experience demonstrates, some young people enjoy Beethoven/Mozart/etc. Indeed, I have proof of this when our entrancing symphony orchestra comes west.
Would RTE producers of programmes please accept that music does not inevitably mean rock or pop? - Yours, etc,
