Madam, - Could we possibly have a little editorial balance on the carry-on in Rome these last few days? Not everybody thinks that the Irish people are honoured by having yet another cardinal. Some see it as a shame.

A shame that Rome was able to find yet another man who could be relied upon not to voice support in defence of full equality for women within its organisation. A shame that he can be relied upon not to lift a finger in support of same-sex marriage. These were essential qualifications for the so called "honour" bestowed on this country on Saturday.

That other countries have fewer cardinals per capita can only be seen as a sign of their maturity. - Yours, etc,
