Sir, - As a former consultant in Merlin Park Hospital I was appalled to learn that 60 beds and an operating theatre in University College Hospital Galway are to be closed until the end of the year. The reason: "The hospital has exceeded its budget for 1998". The mind boggles. This closure entails further suffering for the sick and, sadly, perhaps death for some.
Money is now the ruler of life and apparently there is a considerable amount of it floating around. I implore the relevant Ministers to provide health care for the sick and injured.
Surely the swindlers should be made to pay for the sick. - Yours, etc.,
