Sir, - It is hard to be sure which is more annoying

Sir, - It is hard to be sure which is more annoying. On the one hand, the ESB is spending large swathes of the money it receives from consumers to advertise itself, even though it currently remains a monopoly. Perhaps this is excusable because it anticipates European legislation to bring a freer market.

If we assume that this money must be spent, it leads me to the second irritant. Plastered on billboards is the latest offering from the ESB. It features, in metre-high letters, the following: "Where does the classroom get it's [sic] energy?"

Perhaps it's a subtle, satirical sideswipe at the standard of primary education in Ireland. On balance, I suspect not. Where does the ESB get its proof-readers? - Yours, etc., Simon Mills,
