Sir, - Cllr Eamonn Ryan, chairman of the strategic policy committee on traffic (December 8th) should consult his party colleagues before he puts pen to paper.

In suggesting that we do not need a roads-based policy to deal with port access, he claims some sort of anti-roads and pro-environmental mantle for the Green Party. Can I remind him that all Green Party councillors on Dublin City Council supported the Liffey Tunnel port road proposal? Of course, that might have meant serious problems for the people of Inchicore and Ballyfermot. But then, does that matter to a party that often seems to be more concerned with the possibility of life on Mars than the quality of life here on earth?

The southern port access route proposed by myself, Cllr Eoin Ryan and the Lord Mayor, Senator Joe Doyle, provides for an environmentally friendly road, protects Sandymount Strand and protects the port.

Can I suggest that the chairman of the strategic policy committee on traffic might usefully convene the first ordinary meeting of that committee. Then, together with the various interests who go to make up this city, we can debate this week's Green Party policy position.
