Sir, - I heard a spokesman for taxi drivers on the radio claiming that drivers had paid large sums for their taxi plates - he put forward £55,000 as a typical figure. He also said there was no point in letting the drivers claim this amount against tax because the typical driver paid only £2,000 a year in tax.

If the Government caves in and offers "compensation" to drivers for the cost of their plates, I hope at the very least they will be forced to identify the person who sold the plate and that both parties will be subject to an audit by the Revenue Commissioners before any more money is paid out to members of the taxi drivers' cartel. Or is this too much to ask? - Yours, etc.,
