Sir, – It is with great sadness that I hear that Mary Raftery has died (Breaking News, January 10th). I worked with her at In Dublinmagazine in the late 1970s. She had a formidable intellect and possessed many gifts, the greatest being her warm kindness. May she rest in peace. – Yours, etc,

PATRICK O’BYRNE,

Phibsborough, Dublin 7.

Sir, – I was shocked and saddened to read of the death of the distinguished journalist  Mary Raftery. Her tireless campaigning on behalf of the abused was an example of top-class investigative journalism which threw a bright light into the murky corners of concealment and obfuscation attempted by the disgraced leaders of the Catholic Church.

Her death is a grievous loss to the continuing campaigns on behalf of the voiceless and vulnerable.   The world of journalism will be the poorer for her going. My sincere condolences to her family and friends. – Yours, etc,

JOHN GOLDEN,

Blackheath Park,

London, England.
