CRISIS AT AER LINGUS

Sir, - I refer to a letter from Capt Finbar K. Tighe (January 31st).

Sir, - I refer to a letter from Capt Finbar K. Tighe (January 31st).

The issue of safety is at the core of all Aer Lingus's operations policies. As chief pilot I am charged with the statutory responsibility for the operational control of all Aer Lingus aircraft. In discharging that responsibility the principal priority is to ensure the safety of the operation and in so doing I am obliged to satisfy myself with regard to the well-being of pilots and their fitness to operate their rostered duties.

From time to time issues may arise in a pilot's personal or professional life where it is appropriate to satisfy myself that both the safety of the travelling public and the well-being of the individual are being protected. In compliance with the chief pilot's statutory role, it is both necessary and prudent that these duties are carried out to the best of my abilities in order to ensure the operation of all Aer Lingus flights to the highest possible safety standards. - Yours, etc.,

Capt HENRY DONOHOE,
