Sir, One of the disadvantages of casinos, which I note that politicians and commentators have not taken very seriously, is their attractiveness to organised crime.
Perhaps the problem is that people associate the term "organised crime" with dark, moustachioed gentlemen wearing fedora hats and believe we have nothing to fear from such stereotypes. The truth is somewhat different. We have, in fact, one or more of the most effective groups in the world involved in organised crime in this country. Consider the following.
The most substantial handlers of ready cash in this country are the supermarket multiples. Who are the biggest companies in this business? Quinnsworth and Dunnes Stores. Don Tidey and Ben Dunne's kidnapping experiences are unfortunately an all too clear proof of the effectiveness of our criminals at tapping into any substantial source of ready cash.
There will be no need to import anyone from Las Vegas; our homegrown versions could probably teach them a thing or two. For once, let us be wise enough to see beyond the immediate cash fix, and see the appalling social and economic costs the country as a whole will have to bear. - Yours, etc.,
