Madam, - Darragh Higgins writes (August 21st) that "the magnanimity of the Danish minister's apology in relation to the Viking invasions of Ireland over 1,000 years ago leads one to wonder why a certain other nation cannot find the words to apologise for a much more recent invasion of this country".

I agree with these comments.Will it take 1,000 years for an Irish prime minister to give an apology to the Iraqi people for Ireland's participation in the invasion and occupation of Iraq, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people? - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Darragh Higgins implies that England should follow the lead of Denmark and apologise for invading Ireland. Mr Higgins seems unaware that it was an invitation from Dermot MacMurrough which brought the English, including Strongbow and my own Geraldine ancestors, to Ireland, not an invasion. Perhaps it is the descendents of Dermot MacMurrough who owe us the apology. - Yours, etc,
