ABBEY THEATRE ADVISORY COUNCIL

BRIAN JACKSON,

BRIAN JACKSON,

Sir, - In his opinion column of Tuesday, October 8th, concerning the election to the Advisory Council of the Abbey Theatre, Fintan O'Toole states: "Neither John O'Donoghue nor Charlie McCreevy, who are represented on the shareholding body, nominated any other candidate and Paddy Duffy was elected by default."

Under the memorandum and articles of association of the Abbey Theatre, neither the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, the Minister for Finance nor the board of directors had the right to nominate or to vote in the filling of this particular vacancy on the Advisory Council to the Board of Directors. - Yours, etc.,

BRIAN JACKSON, Managing Director, The Abbey Theatre, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1.

A chara, - In his article of October 8th entitled "The theatre of the unethical", Fintan O'Toole referred to the election of a new member to the Advisory Council of the Abbey. In this context he stated that "neither John O'Donoghue nor Charlie McCreevy, who are represented on the shareholding body, nominated any other candidate and Paddy Duffy was elected by default".

I wish to point out that under the memorandum and articles of association of the Abbey Theatre neither Mr John O'Donoghue as Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism nor Mr Charlie McCreevy as the Minister for Finance had the right to nominate or to vote in the filling of this particular vacancy. - Yours, etc.,

NIGEL DALY, Press Officer, Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, Dublin 2.
