‘A lucky generation’?

Sir, – There has been a lot of nonsense talked recently about the old age pension. Simply stated, there are non-contributory and contributory State pensions. The former are means tested. The contributory are “what it says on the tin”, contributory. I, and thousands of others, have paid into this pension for 40 years or more.

Personally, in my early years I paid on a voluntary basis when I was not obliged legally to do so. It is absurd to suggest that contributory pensions should be means tested. It may well also be illegal. Nobody is suggesting that other State pensions – ie public sector – should be means tested, even though they are largely non-contributory. – Yours, etc,
