A haitch or an aitch?

Sir, – I read with interest Edward Thornley’s letter regarding the pronunciation of an “aitch” or a “haitch”.

As someone who was educated in London by Dominican nuns at St James’s, Burnt Oak, we always pronounced it as “haitch”. On starting work, my colleagues mocked me for not pronouncing in the English way as “aitch”.

Graham Reid, the Belfast playwright, once told me that you could always tell where someone from the North had been educated: “haitch” indicating a Catholic school education; “aitch” did not! – Yours, etc,
