Zimbabwe opposition leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai was today charged with treason after police accused himof holding nationwide rallies and urging his supporters to oust President Robert Mugabe, Mr Tsvangirai's lawyer said.
Police arrested Mr Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) at his Harare home earlier today on the last day of opposition-led protests against Mr Mugabe.
"Two policemen from the law and order section came here and said he was under arrest and they were taking him to the central police station," said Mr William Bango, spokesman for the MDC.
Thousands of Mr Mugabe's militia supporters flooded Harare today in a massive show of force designed to head off a final day of MDC-led protests against the government.
