Students on two of the Aran islands received their results by aircraft yesterday.
On Inis Mor, one of the 15 Leaving Cert students delivered the results himself. Ronan Mac Giolla Padraic is a part-time postman. He was very pleased with his results, according to school principal Mr Caoibhin O'Gill, who said the results arrived by aircraft and were in the post office in CillRonain shortly before 11 a.m.
Most students arrived at the island school, Gairm Scoil Einne, to find out how they did shortly after 11 a.m. Mr O'Gill said all the students did very well.
On Inis Oirr, the aircraft touched down earlier than usual yesterday and school principal Ms Brid Ni Dhonnacha was at the post office to pick up the results for the seven students in her school who sat the exam. She said they were all pleased. The two students from Inishbofin (which has no secondary school), who did the Leaving Cert at St Paul's, Oughterard, and St Jarlath's College, Tuam, accessed their results on the Internet.
Student Carmel Quirke (18) got a letter in the post offering her work as a model with an agency in Milan only hours before she got her results at Mercy Convent, Tuam.
While delighted with her results, she had no doubt about a choice of career. "I was going to do modelling irrespective of how I got on in the examinations."
Insp Pat Lahane said extra gardai were being drafted into Galway to deal with any problems created by Leaving Cert students celebrating the results. "We are also warning publicans that it is their duty to ensure that there is no underage drinking during the celebrations."
