Kariwa - Residents of a small Japanese village that is home to the world's largest nuclear power plant voted yesterday against the use of recycled nuclear fuel, a move that puts the nation's entire energy policy under the spotlight.
The referendum in Kariwa, a farming village about 300 km north of Tokyo, was on the issue of whether Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) should be allowed to use recycled fuel known as MOX in its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in the village. The plant provides 20 per cent of Tokyo's electric power.
