Officers called to an incident in a flat in Cork last night came face to face with the men, believed to be carrying a handgun, and requested armed back-up.

The regional support unit attended the scene, on John Redmond Street, and shortly after midnight the two suspects — one in his late teens and one in his late 20s — were arrested.

No one was injured and three others in the property were not arrested.

The suspects are being held at Mayfield Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. They can be detained for three days.
