Twitter is to open an international office in Dublin, the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) said today.
The State agency did not say how many jobs would be created. The announcement was made in a tweet by the IDA. “Ireland is trending. Twitter to establish international office in Dublin," it read.
Speaking this morning, Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation Richard Bruton said the office would support the company's rapid growth.
He said the announcement was a "fantastic win" for Ireland and reflected the importance of the US mission undertaken by the Government.
An IDA spokesman said Twitter had been an investment target for the agency for some time.
The Dublin office will be Twitter's third international office, after Japan and London. The company is currently looking at buildings in the Dublin 2 and Dublin 4 areas, though no contract has been signed.
The jobs will be initially in the fields of finance, user-support and marketing.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Bruton noted Twitter would be joining the likes of Facebook, Google and PayPal in establishing a base in the State.
He said Twitter's plan showed the underlying strengths in Irish economy were recognised by some of the most innovative companies in the world.
The Minister added there was no indication of exact job numbers yet, adding: "Clearly these jobs will be very high quality."
Mr Bruton said other major players in the internet sphere had started off small in Ireland and had gone on to become huge employers.
"The challenge now is to build on our strengths and the presence in Ireland of the world-leading companies like Twitter to build an indigenous engine of growth and get people back to work.
"Today's announcement shows that we have real grounds for optimism in facing that challenge," the Minister said.
