THREE MEN lost their lives in road traffic collisions in Cork, Limerick and Down over the weekend.
On Saturday at 9.20am three cars collided on the N22 at Slivereagh, Ballyvourney, Co Cork. The driver of one of the cars was fatally injured. He has been named as 22-year-old Dabhog Kierse, of Crookstown, Macroom, Co Cork.
Another man injured in the collision was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
In Limerick city on Friday a car collided with an articulated lorry on the Condell Road shortly before 10am. The driver of the vehicle was critically injured and died in the Mid Western Regional Hospital on Saturday night.
The victim has been named locally as Nigel Bucke (29), from Dromcollogher, Co Limerick. Mr Bucke’s three children, aged from two years to 11 years, were in the vehicle with their father when it crashed.
It took emergency workers over two hours to cut Mr Bucke and his children from the car.
An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a car at 3.20am on the Warrenpoint Road, Newry, Co Down. The dead man was from Warrenpoint.
Meanwhile, road safety officers in Mayo have come up with a novel way to try to reduce the number of collisions on Irish roads. Next weekend, drivers in the country will be treated to free head massages. Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, said it hoped to reduce sleep-related crashes on Irish roads over the bank holiday weekend.
Freeman’s service station at Kilkelly on the N5 will proved free head and feet massages next weekend.
