Sweden's agriculture ministry has barred its citizens or foreign nationals from importing any meat or dairy products into the country until further notice.

"The ban applies to products from all countries, not just those affected by foot-and-mouth or mad cow disease," ministry director Ms Ingbritt Irhammar said.

All travellers arriving in Sweden will be forced to discard all meat and dairy products in special containers placed at all entry points, she added.

Professional importers are not affected by the measure, as they can delineate the origin of the products they import.

Sweden has so far remained unscathed by the animal illnesses ravaging other parts of Europe, with no cases of either foot-and-mouth or mad cow disease yet confirmed in the country.
