Rangoon - The Burmese opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, yesterday promised her "revolutionaries of democracy" would win a certain victory and overturn military rule, despite a warning by the junta that its enemies would be eliminated.

The Nobel laureate made her prediction after the junta chairman, Mr Than Shwe, used the annual Armed Forces Day to issue a stinging attack on her National League for Democracy (NLD), painting the party as a tool of foreign "colonialists" bent on destroying the nation.

Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the freedom of Dublin in a ceremony earlier this month.
