THE STATE is seeking the forfeiture under the new drugs money legislation of over £20,000 against John Gilligan, who has acknowledged he is a suspect in the Veronica Guerin murder, and members of his family.

The money, which the State wants both Mr Gilligan and his family to forfeit, was seized by gardai last July 27th, Mr Shane Murphy BL, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, told Dublin Circuit Civil Court yesterday.

The DPP was making the application, against Mr Gilligan, his wife, Mrs Geraldine Gilligan, and his brother, Mr Thomas Gilligan, under section 38.6 of the Criminal Justice Act 1994.

Mr Murphy said the money was the proceeds of drugs dealing.

He told Judge Cyril Kelly that Mr Gilligan had been notified of the application and he had legal representation in this State for other matters. He said the State wanted a two week adjournment so that notice could be served on Mrs Gilligan, of Mucklon, Co Meath and her brother in law Mr Thomas Gilligan, of Greenfort Crescent, Clondalkin, Dublin.

Judge Kelly agreed to adjourn the matter to February 24th next.
