Sri Lankan President Mr Chandrika Kumaratunga's United People's Freedom Alliance will have to form a minority government after it took 105 seats in the 225-seat parliament, final election results showed today.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party (UNP) won 82 seats, while the balance was made up from smaller parties, including 22 seats for a Tamil Tiger rebel-backed party and nine seats to an all-clergy party of Buddhist monks.
According to the Elections Commission, the Freedom Alliance won 45.8 per cent of the vote, while the UNP finished with 37.9 per cent. The National Heritage Party of the monks won 6.1 per cent and the Tamil National Alliance took 6.6 per cent
