Waterford city staged one of its most impressive spectacles as over 100 local companies, community groups and youth organisations combined for an impressive first St Patrick's Day parade of the new millennium.
Although skies were overcast, there was a large turnout to see the show, which got under way at noon and lasted almost an hour.
The ingenuity of the renowned Spraoi Street Theatre Company was evident in several of the colourful entries in the float section, with Spraoi themselves leading the way with the world's largest Harley Davidson. Pre-parade entertainment was provided along the route by Yellow Velvet Theatre Company, while the Mount Sion Silver Band and the Mercy Convent Dance Troupe entertained the crowds in front of the review stand.
Joining the Mayor and members of Waterford City Council on the stand was guest of honour Mr Charles Gautier, Mayor of Waterford's twin city, St Herblain in France.
Meanwhile, Spraoi was also behind one of the highlights of the Dublin parade with a team of around 50 people dispatched to the capital for the extravaganza. Krakaboom, a monster dragon doubling as a giant trash percussion musical instrument, was escorted along the Dublin parade route by 15 mutant puppets.
