An ill fisherman was airlifted to Dublin from a boat off the coast of Co Louth last night.

A Dublin coastguard spokesman said it was contacted by colleagues in Belfast after a distress call was received from a fishing boat shortly before midnight and medical evacuation was requested.

A helicopter took off from Dublin to evacuate the man from the boat, which was in the Irish Sea off Clogher Head. He was then brought to Beaumont Hospital for treatment.

The illness is not thought to be life-threatening.
