Catholic and Protestant families in north Belfast have called for a new peace-line wall to be erected following a night of sectarian rioting. The trouble started in Mountcollyer Street, which is religiously mixed, and then spread.
Early yesterday the UDA staged a show of strength, when a female paramilitary flanked by hooded gunmen read a statement saying they had taken to the streets to reassure loyalists.
Catholics in Mountcollyer Street claimed Protestants started attacking their homes on Monday afternoon. Three families said they were forced to leave their houses.
However, Protestants in the street said republicans were trying to intimidate them from their homes. "The Catholics moved in and they want us out," said a resident. The rioting continued until around 3.30 a.m.
