The search for Mr Olaf Jansen, a Swede missing since shortly after Christmas, resumed on the Kerry mountains yesterday with members of Kerry Mountain Rescue sweeping parts of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Mangerton mountain.
The search was described as on a smaller scale than previously. It follows an intensive four-day combing of the mountains last week, involving 30 members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue, along with the Killarney Water Rescue Team, the Civil Defence and the Shannon-based Sikorsky helicopter.
Over 160 square kilometres of mountainous terrain were covered in the search, which failed to produce any sign of the missing man. Lakes on the route have also been examined.
Mr Jansen, a 23-year-old student and over 6 foot 4 inches, is married to a Kerry woman and he was on his honeymoon in Kerry. An experienced climber with army training which included survival skills, Mr Jansen had set off alone on a challenging three-day trek from Mangerton mountain on the edge of the Killarney National Park.
He was aiming to conclude his venture in the Black Valley at Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain, on Thursday, December 30th.
He set out with enough food for four days, a tent, and was well-equipped. However, he has not been heard of since he sent a text message on Tuesday, December 28th. His voice mail messages were accessed on the early afternoon of December 29th. When he failed to make contact on Thursday the alarm was raised.
Mr Gerry Christie, spokesman for Kerry Mountain Rescue, said the team was baffled by his disappearance.
