Asking Shannon airport to do without regular passenger flights is like asking “Le Havre or Rotterdam to do without ships”, delegates were told in an appeal to prevent the airport from becoming a “morgue”.

The conference supported a motion from Muireann Nealon of Clare constituency that the party give a commitment to the provision of regular scheduled passenger flights into Shannon.

Ms Nealon said the region was expected to say okay to military flights for “the perpetual war machine”. She said there had been a 27 per cent fall in tourism in the region and an “appalling haemorrhaging of jobs”.
