Seven-time champion Pete Sampras, the sixth seed, slumped to a humiliating second round defeat at Wimbledon today, losing to Switzerland's George Bastl 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4.

The Swiss player, who only made it into the tournament as a lucky loser having lost originally in qualifying, is ranked at just 145 in the world.

He now takes on either Argentina's David Nalbandian or Paul-Henri Mathieu of France in the third round.

Unseeded Belgian Olivier Rochus caused another major shock when beating second-seeded Russian Marat Safin 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/1).

Former US Open champion Safin, ranked number one in the ATP Champions Race was a quarter-finalist here last year, but the lanky Russian could not match his 5ft 5in opponent, ranked 51st in the 2hr 32min clash.

Rochus, 21, who ousted older brother Christophe in the first round, meets Frenchman Arnaud Clement for a place in the fourth round.

Earlier Sandrine Testud became the highest ranking seed to exit this year's women's singles.

The 30-year-old eighth-ranked Frenchwoman was beaten by compatriot Mary Pierce on court 15.

Pierce, winner of the Australian Open in 1995 and French Open two years ago, came through 6-3 6-4.
