Niamey - Niger's independent electoral commission last night suspended publication of results of the first round of Sunday's presidential election.

With the results from just less than half the electorate released, Mr Mamadou Tandja, from the former ruling MNDS party, was leading with a little more than 300,000 votes. One observer said that the commission feared a public outcry of fraud as the partial results were likely to differ from the final ones.
