The number of road traffic deaths for the past nine months was 249, a 17 per cent reduction on the same period last year, according to preliminary Garda figures released by the Minister for Transport.

Mr Brennan said that 301 people died during the first nine months of last year and 376 people in total died. He told Green Party TD, Mr Ciaran Cuffe (Dún Laoghaire) in a written reply, that of the 411 people who died in 2001, 30 car drivers and 15 front-seat passengers were not wearing a seatbelt.
