Red Cross man shot dead in Baghdad attack

The Swiss-based humanitarian agency said that the vehiclewas clearly marked with the ICRC's red emblems

The International Committee ofthe Red Cross said a staff member was killed and one of itsdrivers wounded in a shooting south of Baghdad today. It said Sri Lankan technician Mr Nadisha Yasassri Ranmuthu haddied on the spot after the vehicle in which he was travellingwith driver Mr Hamed Rashid came under fire near the town of Hilla.

A US-led military alliance has been struggling to restoreorder in Iraq since overthrowing former president Saddam Husseinin April. 39 US soldiers have died, including one today.

Today, a foreign employee of the InternationalOrganisation for Migration (IOM) was slightly injured and thedriver killed when their vehicle veered into a bus after beingraked by gunfire from a passing car, also south of the capital.

The ICRC said it was studying the implications of the attackto decide on its "future course of action in Iraq."

The agency, which has some 850 officials in Iraq, brieflysuspended operations in Baghdad in early April when a Canadianofficial was shot dead in the capital shortly after the topplingof Saddam.
