For most of us the sudden onslaught of bad weather meant dragging out last winter's rain-gear, but the concerns of those who live by the fruits of the sea are very different. Anyone facing the ongoing battle with rough weather will remember those lost in previous years. Seascapes (RTE Radio 1, 9.30 p.m., Thursday) meets the widows of fishermen lost at sea.

The Sea's ability to confound is taken up in The Mystery of the Affray (BBC Radio 4, 11 a.m., Monday) which investigates, in two parts, what happened to the HMS Affray which disappeared in April 1951.

It is radio's turn this week to mark Pope John Paul's visit to Ireland, 20 years ago this month. Derek Mooney reflects on the visit, witnessed by over two-and-a-half million people, and listens to some reminiscences in The Documentary on One (RTE Radio 1, 7.05 p.m., Wednesday).
