Prince Charles was slapped around the face with a flower today by a war protester in the Latvian capital Riga after the Prince had laid a wreath to commemorate the Baltic state's independence.

The incident happened as Prince Charles chatted to people in the crowd, a woman reached over and hit him with the flowers. The Prince ducked and tried to fend off the protester who was led away by police.

As she was arrested the woman said: "I'm protesting against Latvia joining NATO and I'm against the war in Afghanistan. Britain is the enemy."

The protester detained for questioning and is believed to be of Russian descent and a supporter of the national Bolshevik party.

The incident was over in moments and Prince Charles, who is on a five-day tour of the Baltic states, continued on his walkabout.

Minutes earlier, he had laid a wreath to commemorate 10 years of Latvia's independence.

Prince Charles also met Latvians who had endured the so-called Night of Terror on June 14th, 1941, when the marauding Red Army snatched thousands of horrified citizens from their homes and deported them in railway cars to Siberia.

The Prince's five-day tour of the Baltic States marks 10 years since Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia finally shrugged off the Soviets occupiers in 1991 as the USSR dramatically collapsed.
