Pope Benedict said today he would visit Cameroon and Angola in March when he makes his first trip to Africa since becoming pontiff in 2005.

The Pope announced the trip during a sermon closing a synod of the world's Roman Catholic bishops.

He said he would travel to Cameroon to deliver the working document of a future synod whose theme will be Africa, and to Angola to celebrate 500 years of evangelisation there.

Pope Benedict's predecessor, Pope John Paul II, travelled widely throughout Africa during his more than 26-year pontificate.
