Harney says imports are greatest threat to newspaper industry

THE Irish newspaper industry faced its greatest threat yet from British imports the PD leader warned

THE Irish newspaper industry faced its greatest threat yet from British imports the PD leader warned. Unlike other industries, it is vital if we are to protect the social, cultural, economic and political aspects of Irish life. "We need to enhance our indigenous newspaper industry as much as possible", Ms Mary Harney added.

The Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Mr Bruton, refused to be drawn when Ms Harney asked him if he favoured a reduction in the VAT rate on the cover price to allow Irish newspapers to be better able to compete with imports.

Mr Bruton said the Government had set up a commission on the industry which had submitted a detailed report, and it would be inappropriate for him to offer his views on matters which were within its terms of reference. "We have a commission report. I intend to have that published, and we will then address those recommendations."

Pressed further by Ms Harney, the Minister said he expected the report to be published within weeks.
