A Spanish policeman was shot in unclear circumstances in the town of Leitza in the country's north today, a government spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman declined to comment on earlier media reports that the officer had been shot in a gunfight after surprising people trying to plant a bomb outside a police barracks.

State news agency EFE reported that initial reports of a possible attack by Basque rebels seemed unlikely.
