A YOUNG man died of an opiate overdose after a party with his girlfriend to mark their engagement, an inquest had heard.

A YOUNG man died of an opiate overdose after a party with his girlfriend to mark their engagement, an inquest had heard.

Wayne Grant (19), Mac Uilliam Green, Tallaght, Dublin, was found collapsed on the couch by his girlfriend, Susan Gallagher early on September 20th, 2007, Dublin County Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

The couple had thrown a party the previous night to mark their engagement.

Neighbour Patrick Stokes told the court that Ms Gallagher came banging on his door at about 8.20am on September 20th and said she couldn't wake her fiance.

A friend of the couple who attended the party said in a statement read out in court that she left two full bottles of methadone at the couple's house on the night in question.

A postmortem found that Mr Grant had a lethal level of methadone in his system with 9.5 milligrams per millilitre in his blood. He also had a trace of free morphine and sedative drugs in his system. Coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
