More than 130 permanent and part-time jobs are to be lost in Ennis, Co Clare, following the closure of a US semiconductor manufacturer.

Microsemi, which has been in Ennis since 1992, confirmed today that it plans to close the Co Clare plant within the next 18 months.

Manufacturing is to be concentrated at two of the company's plants in the United States.

However, the company has said it will provide redundancy packages for its 44 permanent and 87 temporary staff. It also plans to retain its 15-strong European sales and marketing team in the town.
