The Northern Alliance is reported to be preparing for a major offensive against Afghanistan's ruling Taliban while US and British forces bombard the regime's power bases.

"We are in a state of absolute readiness," said Mr Touryali Ghiasi, a senior strategist with the anti-Taliban militia. "We are preparing to move".

Some alliance forces went into action near Kabul last night, just after the attacks. They claimed it was a co-ordinated offensive. Fighting stopped after a few hours.

Mr Ghiasi said most Taliban offices and military sites are not near populated areas "so we don't expect many civilian causalities".

He said his information indicated the Taliban ministries for defence, information and interior were destroyed in Kabul, the Afghan capital. The key Darulaman military base west of the city was also hit, he said.

In the northern Kondoos province, an ammunition dump exploded in a huge fireball after apparently being hit by US missiles, Mr Ghiasi said.
