Striking Nigerian oil workers have agreed to release nearly 100 foreigners held on four offshore rigs for over two weeks, a senior union official said today.

"Everybody is expected to be moving home from this evening, depending on logistics," Mr Joseph Akilanja, deputy president of the umbrella Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), told reporters.

A total of 97 foreign workers, including about 20 Americans and 30 Britons, have been trapped on the platforms since April 19th.

The oil workers are protesting over their employment conditions and the dismissal of five fellow workers.
