New paramilitary death threats against a number of Catholics who sit on a community policing body in Northern Ireland were discussed at an emergency meeting today.

Members of the Cookstown District Policing Partnership (DPP) in Co Tyrone met local police chiefs after the warnings were issued by republican paramilitaries.

DPP manager Mr Philip Moffett said: "We're holding the meeting to discuss the threats made against selective members of the partnership so we can discuss their personal security".

It is understood the warnings were received by nationalist SDLP members of the body and all independent representatives regarded as being Catholic.

The new alert came just days after a member of the Fermanagh DPP quit following a death threat by dissident republicans.

Independent member Mr Cathal O'Dolan was warned he would be executed if he continued his involvement with the partnership. The "Real IRA" was linked to that threat.

Even though Sinn Féin has yet to endorse the new policing arrangements in Northern Ireland, mainstream republicans condemned the death threats.
