More than style on parade as judged by some tetchy repartee

Sean MacConnell heard surprising comments when he mingled with the contenders for Best Dressed Lady.

They may have been elegantly dressed, but some of the contenders for best-dressed lady at the Horse Show had tongues as sharp as cactuses.

"She has legs on her like a drinks cabinet," one woman observed about a rival for the prize of a €10,000 diamond.

"That's very appropriate seeing the amount she drinks," said her companion.

"That's not a bra she is wearing, it's the Dundrum suspension bridge," someone else remarked about another entrant.

"She has a builder's tan, but she has the build as well," was the pithy dismissal of another rival.

None of these comments were directed at the eventual winner, Ms Laoise O'Murchu from Athy, Co Kildare. She wore a purple halterneck catsuit with a pink flower and purple feather headpiece.

The diamond, supplied by Appleby of Dublin, has replaced the traditional prize of a car for the best-dressed lady at the show - and not to everyone's satisfaction.

"You can't drive a diamond," said one woman to another as they walked away from the bandstand.

There was a male winner too. The Best Dressed Man prize went to Mr Brian Archer from Ashford, Co Wicklow, who won a Louis Copeland suit.

Mr Copeland was one of the judges, and he will also be at the National Ploughing Championships next month where he will be judging the most appropriately dressed person at the event.

There was a huge attendance yesterday at the Horse Show which basked in the bright sunshine.

The main jumping arena, which will be the showpiece for the Nations Cup today, was being watered overnight to ensure a soft landing for the international competitors.
