London - Nearly half of all children aged between seven and 16 own mobile phones, text-messaging their friends rather than keeping them for emergencies, a new report says.

For girls, keeping in touch is more important, with 52 per cent owning a phone compared to 44 per cent of boys. The survey was carried out by the NOP Research Group.
