World number two golfer Phil Mickelson defeated fellow American David Berganio on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the title at the $4 million Bob Hope Classic.
The two players went to extra holes after both finished on 330, 30-under par, at the 90-hole tournament. Mickelson fired a closing eight-under 64; Berganio returned a 66.
Briny Baird and Cameron Beckman shared third place on 332, one stroke ahead of Jerry Kelly.
Brandel Chamblee, Chris DiMarco, Justin Leonard, Kenny Perry, Kirk Triplett, Charles Howell and South African Deane Pappas finished on 334.
Mickelson, competing for the first time since last August, also earned a lifetime exemption on the US PGA Tour for collecting his 20th victory on the circuit.
Tiger Woods, who skipped this week's event, is the only other player under 50 to reach 20 tour victories.
