A man who was attacked in a Cork suburb last Monday night received 17 stab wounds resulting in life-threatening injuries, a court heard yesterday.

Mr Stephen Wong of Carrypeter, St Patrick's Hill, Cork, was remanded in custody with consent to £15,000 cash bail and Mr Mark Oldfield, of no fixed abode, a native of England, was remanded in custody when they appeared before Judge Uinsionn Mac Gruairc on charges of assaulting Mr Eric Hegarty, causing him harm, at Westlawn, Wilton, Cork, on November 30th.

Det Garda Con Griffin opposed the granting of bail to Mr Wong (29) because of the seriousness of the charge.

Det Garda Con Delahunty opposed the granting of bail to Mr Oldfield (25), who he said used different names and did not have a permanent address. At the time of his arrest he was about to board a bus for Dublin with a one-way ticket and witness said he believed that if given bail Mr Oldfield would not stand trial.
